Using search engines to drive prospects to your website is one way of how to make money online and may also be called search engine optimization or SEO. There are numerous other methods to obtain prospects without using search engines, including forums, blogs, content syndication, article directories, classified ads and many more.
When I say search engines, I mean Google or Yahoo or MSN or something similar. Google, however, is indeed the most widely used search engine with nearly 80% of all search engine traffic.
Google scores or prioritizes pages of a website and not the website in its entirety. It's really essential for a marketer to know this particularly if you want to grasp how to make money online. A website could have lots of different pages and Google would scan each page and come to a decision about the content of that page and whether that page should come up when someone does a search.
The descriptions someone enters into the Google search bar or any search engine's search bar is defined as a keyword or keyword phrase. The results of this search are relevant to the keyword terms and are confirmed to be relevant by Google. Google determines this by browsing the hundreds of millions of web pages in cyberspace and searches for content pertinent to the keyword search terms.
The results are also known as SERPS or search engine results pages. Within the SERPS are two kinds of results. There are the free organic results in the left center of the page and the fee based ads on the right side and periodically at the top placed above the organic results.
The paid or sponsored ads are actually free to the advertiser until someone clicks on the ad. The advertiser is then charged a fee for each click. This is called pay per click advertising or PPC and the advertiser has bid for placement on the page.
Interestingly, the lowest rate per cent of clicks are the paid ads on the right then the paid ads on the top get a few points more but the free organic ads get the highest clicks on average. You can, however, get a paid ad on the page very soon for a fee but the organic ad placements especially on page one, take time, effort and skill to obtain. But, they are worth every bit of it as you'll find out as you learn how to make money online.
Google loves content and will repay you with well placed rankings in the SERPS. Google also loves back links. This just means that when other websites are linking back to your site Google thinks your site is valued and relevant and will reward you in the SERPS for this too. The more popular the site linking back to you the better Google likes it.
Probably the best way to get content on the web and get a high ranking in the SERPS for no cost is to write an article around a unique keyword, as long as it's not too general of a keyword or too competitive, and then publish to a highly visited article directory like Ezine Articles.
You will put a link to your website in the resource or bio box in the article directory so targeted prospects can find you.
A different benefit to publishing on a high authority article directory is that other website owners will probably link back to your article and you'll be earning back links.
You now know how to make money online using the search engines so go and create content and build back links to your website.
